Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family of Jill Scott consisted of her maternal grandparents and mother. The only child she has. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She planned on becoming an instructor of English in a secondary institution. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she quit college. She started her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In a Roots show she came out to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
